Alicia has worked as a Retrieval doctor with the Royal Australian Flying Doctors Service, and has ongoing roles as a Ship’s Physician to polar regions, an Event and Expedition Medical Officer and in International Medical Repatriation.
Alicia is currently working as a Staff Specialist in the Royal Hobart Hospital’s Emergency Department and in the Hospital’s Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. The facility’s chamber is unique in the Southern Hemisphere in that it is dual capable, Hyperbaric to 6ATA and Hypobaric up 100K ft. Alicia completes ‘fitness to fly’ and ‘fitness to dive’ medicals and is the lead facilitator for the facility’s Altitude Physiology Training Program.
A Senior Lecturer in Space Medicine at the University of Tasmania, Alicia has a particular interest in Space Medicine and in finding solutions to managing acute illness and injury beyond Low Earth Orbit and in the assessment and optimization of ‘fitness to fly’ for Commercial Spaceflight Participants. Alicia is an Associate Member of the ESA Topical Team on Spaceflight Decompression Sickness for Exploration Missions, a field she is particularly passionate about.
To gain a personal understanding of the challenges faced by Astronauts, Alicia has participated in two analogue space missions as an Analogue Astronaut on ‘Mars’ at the Mars Desert Research Station, USA, and more recently on the ‘Moon’ at LunAres, Poland. During the latter, she had roles as the Mission Commander and EVA Procedures Specialist.

He is a Consultant Anaesthetist specialising in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, with expertise in heart and lung transplantation, pulmonary endarterectomy, complex aortic surgery and ECMO.
Dr Martinez has a particular interest in the perioperative management of high-risk patients with pulmonary hypertension, including those undergoing non-cardiac surgery, balloon pulmonary angioplasty and pulmonary endarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Professor Britta Regli-von Ungern-Sternberg AM
Chair of Paediatric Anaesthesia, University of Western Australia
Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist, Perth Children’s Hospital
Head, Perioperative Medicine
Prof Britta von Ungern-Sternberg AM FAHMS is the Chair of Paediatric Anaesthesia at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and a Consultant Anaesthetist at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). She is also the Director of the Institute for Paediatric Perioperative Excellence at UWA and Team Lead Perioperative Medicine at The Kids Research Institute Australia.
Britta is a highly experienced clinical trialist with an outstanding track record of impactful research and has led many clinical trials both nationally and internationally involving tens of thousands of children. She is a pioneer in the area of respiratory complications, the most common paediatric perioperative problem, and her patient-centred research has led to significant global practice changes and a reduction in complications around the world. Her entire research program is co-designed with consumers of all ages, ensuring that the children and their families are at the heart and centre of every research project, no matter how large or small.
Britta has published over 350 peer-reviewed articles. Her innovative research, challenging accepted knowledge, has influenced international guidelines e.g., the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) difficult airway guidelines, global neonatal airway guidelines, and led to practice changes that optimise perioperative management in paediatric anaesthesia. It is well-known that there is a time lag of up to 17 years between research and implementation (Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine PMID:22179294). However, Britta has an impressive record of rapid translation and implementation of her research findings. For example, research results of the RCTs VISI (Lancet 2020, PMID: 33308472) and OPTIMISE (Lancet Child and Adolescent Health 2023, PMID: 36436541) have rapidly incorporated into the Difficult Airway Guidelines of the American Society of Anesthesiology (01/2022, PMID:34762729, VISI only) and in Guidelines of the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and British Journal of Anaesthesia (01/2024, PMID:38065762/P38018248).

In anaesthesia, his research involves applying evidence synthesis methods to improving airway management safety, whereas in the ICU, he is interested in precision approaches to antimicrobial pharmacology. His systematic reviews related to airway management have looked at a range of topics from airway management devices to diagnostic accuracy of clinical signs for excluding oesophageal intubation.
Professor Bernhard Riedel
Director, Department of Anaesthetics, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Medicine
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia
Professor Bernhard Riedel is the Director of Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, and Pain Medicine at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and a Professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Prior senior posts include Vice Chair at MD Anderson Cancer Center (Texas, USA), Professor of Cardiac Anaesthesia at Vanderbilt University (USA), and Consultant Anaesthetist at Royal Brompton-Harefield NHS Trust (London, UK).
His research focuses on the “hidden pandemic” of postoperative complications and death—now the third leading cause of mortality globally – which often impedes timely cancer treatment (adjuvant therapy) and cure. His research aims to reduce these adverse outcomes through innovative risk stratification and prehabilitation to reduced modifiable patient risk, and enhanced perioperative care optimisation to reduced variability in care delivery.
